Statesboro, Ga. – The Eagles blanked the visiting South Carolina State Bulldogs 4-0 Wednesday from the Wallis Tennis Center. Typically, matches are contested with 7 points on the line, however, the Eagles began by taking 4 points and clinching the match, so the rest of the in progress matches were unfinished.
At No. 1 doubles,
Mary Phillips Smith and
Anne Kurzweil defeated Rassif and Brown 8-2. In the No. 2 doubles position,
Francisca Norregaard and
Daria Vasekina were setback by Marcanikova and Roca 3-8 which meant the doubles point would come down to the No. 3 tandem of Giula Riepe and
Jordana Klein. Ultimately, the Eagle tandem was able to claim victory over Filippova and Duarte 8-4.
Leading 1-0 heading in to singles, it was Vasekina who would rebound and get a quick win over Roca in the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-2. Moments later, Kurzweil defeated Maranikova 6-2, 6-1 to make it 3-0 in favor of the Eagles.
The match winner is credited to lone senior Klein in the No. 1 singles position as she dispatched Filippova 6-1, 6-1 to give the Eagles the 4 points they needed to win the overall match.
The remaining matches were unfinished in the 2nd set.
The Eagles will return to action with their first Sun Belt Conference match-up against Arkansas State Saturday March 7th at 1 p.m. in Atlanta, Georgia.
