Hennon Interview
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Hunter Thomas drove in the first four runs for the Georgia Southern Eagles as they evened the series with a 12-3 win over the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday.
The Bobcats (11-14-1, 7-4) scored two runs in the first inning on a two-out single from Tanner Hill, but Eagle (17-12, 7-4) starter
Tripp Sheppard settled in to pick up his second win of the season.
Sheppard (2-2) set down the side in order in the second and third innings and got a double play in the fifth inning to erase a lead off walk. The senior righthander allowed three runs – one earned – over six innings. Sheppard allowed just four hits and struck out three batters in his fifth start of the season.
Thomas gave the Eagles the lead with a three-run homer in the third inning, his fifth of the season. The junior plated a two-out double and a walk with a ball over the right field fence.
Thomas plated his fourth run of the game with a RBI single in the fifth inning. The Eagles got two more runs in the frame on a base hit from
Dalton Busby. GS tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning to lead 9-2.
Georgia Southern tallied 20 hits for the second time this season. Thomas,
Aaron Mizell and
Ryan Cleveland all finished with four hits. Mizell,
Chase Griffin and Thomas also scored four runs each.
Scott Grist took the loss after allowing 9 runs on 13 hits. Grist (1-2) surrendered 13 hits and walked two batters on 102 pitches.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow to wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. ET first pitch. Neither team has named a starter for Sunday's game.
