SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Bobcats scored seven runs in the third inning to take the series from the Georgia Southern Eagles with an 11-4 win on Sunday at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Eagles (17-13, 7-5) got two quick outs in the third inning, but the Bobcats (12-14, 8-4) took advantage of a pair of two-out walks. Ben McElroy hit a three-run home run and Tanner Hill doubled in two more runs to account for five of the seven runs in the frame.
Matt Geiger took the loss after allowing six runs – four earned – on three hits and a pair of walks. Geiger (1-3) allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first inning on a home run by Granger Studdard and worked a perfect frame in the second inning.
Jeremy Hallonquist picked up the win after holding Georgia Southern to three runs – two earned – over 6.1 innings. Hallonquist (2-0) allowed just two hits and struck out six batters in his first career weekend start.
The Eagles struck first in the contest, scoring an unearned run on a
Chase Griffin ground out.
Kody Adams reached second base to start the game after a pair of errors by the Bobcats' defense.
Georgia Southern picked up their first hit of the ball game on a lead off home run from
Ryan Cleveland in the fifth inning. Cleveland's 4th long ball of the year cut the deficit to 9-2.
Texas State tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Tanner Hill led off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run, and Cory Geisler plated a two-out single from Derek Scheible with a RBI single.
Baseball returns to action next weekend at UL Lafayette. The three-game Sun Belt Conference series begins Friday at 7 p.m. The series continues Saturday with a 7 p.m. start and concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. All times are eastern.
