Georgia Southern’s Head Coach named District Coach of the Year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Georgia Southern Men's Basketball earned a couple more awards on Friday with the announcement of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District Awards. Head Coach Mark Byington was named District 24 Coach of the Year, while Jelani Hewitt earned First Team All-District honors. The awards were voted on by the association's membership.
Byington, who was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year by NBCSports.com, led the Eagles to a 22-9 season in his second year at the University while the Eagles reached the Sun Belt Championship Game to snap a 23-year drought of appearances. The Eagles finished second in the Sun Belt Regular season standings, one-game behind Georgia State in the final standings. Byington was also named Whack Hyder Georgia College Coach of the Year on Tuesday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Jelani Hewitt led the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game this season, ranking third in the Sun Belt Conference. The senior point guard also set new career school records in three-pointers made (270), free throws made (394), and steals (252). Hewitt was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year by the league's coaches and media, as well as a spot on the All-Sun Belt First Team.
