SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State Bobcats scored a combined six runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to rally for a 6-5 victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Eagles (16-12, 6-4) led 3-0 after
Aaron Mizell hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Bobcats (11-13-1, 7-3) scored three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game.
After both teams traded runs in the sixth inning, Texas State took a 6-4 lead in the seventh off of a two-run single by Tanner Hill.
Lucas Humpel allowed two early runs in the second inning on RBI singles by
Kody Adams and
Kent Rollins. Humpel (4-2) allowed just two more runs over his seven innings of work to pick up the victory. The righthander allowed eight hits, walked three and struck out 9 batters.
Blake Whitter started the eighth inning and allowed a run on a
Ryan Cleveland double but maintained the lead to earn his fifth save of the season. Whitter (5) allowed three hits and struck out two batters.
Caleb Pressey was tagged with the loss after surrendering two runs over a third of an inning. Pressey (1-1) faced five batters and allowed two hits in the seventh inning.
The Eagles finished with 11 hits.
Kody Adams and
Aaron Mizell both tallied their ninth multi-hit game of the season and were among four Eagles to record two hits in the contest.
The series continues tomorrow with a 4 p.m. first pitch. Senior righthander
Tripp Sheppard will take the mound for the Eagles. The Bobcats will counter with righthander Scott Grist.
