SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: 20 Questions With Jordana Klein
3/23/2015 11:02:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Statesboro, Ga. – As the lone senior on the Eagles squad (9-3), Jordana Klein has stepped into a natural leadership role. She has competed solely in the No. 1 singles position this season and amassed a 12-7 overall record, 7-4 in dual matches. She has combined with her primary doubles partner this season, Giulia Riepe , for a 8-4 overall record.
We sat down with Klein and played 20 Questions, so let's get to know the senior from Alpharetta, Georgia a little bit better.
1. Who got you in to the game of tennis and when did you start playing?
My best friend growing up starting training to play on tour by six years old, so she has always been my role model. Along with the help of my Dad, my best friend really got me interested in the game, and I started playing around nine years old.
2. If you weren't playing tennis, what other sports would you be competing in at the college level?
I played volleyball and tennis throughout middle and high school, so I would definitely be playing volleyball at the collegiate level. I had offers for both sports but chose tennis in the end.
3. What's it like being the only senior on the team? What's your leadership style?
It's definitely a different dynamic than I'm getting used to. I enjoy being a leader, so the transition has been great! I love this team and we are a small family, so being the only senior hasn't been much of a challenge.
4. If your talents were absolutely limitless, what would you do for a living?
I would love to travel to all the Tennis Major tournaments, write articles about the players and even be a publicist for pro tennis players! I love traveling and tennis, so anything in that realm would be amazing in my opinion.
5. What is your perfect pre-match meal?
I'm pretty simple, so I usually eat eggs and cereal for breakfast and then a salad with chicken for lunch before matches. I will snack on fruit snack, peanut butter crackers and bananas as well before matches.
6. What do you enjoy doing on your day off?
When the weather is nice, I enjoy relaxing by the pool or on my porch and listening to music or spending time with friends. Off days are a great time to relax and enjoy time before getting back to work.
7. If you could start your own professional sports team what would the team name be and what would the colors be….why?
I've always been fond of navy and white/ cream, so those would be my team colors. I would probably start a co-ed tennis or volleyball league because I love both those sports. And as far as a name, I've been an Eagle since pre-k until my senior year of college, so I would have to stick with the Eagles for old times sake!
8. Who on the team are you closest with?
There's only seven of us, so I feel that I am just as close with the two juniors as I am with the two freshmen. We all spend time together off- court, so there's no cliques with my team.
9. What are the first 3 songs on your pre-match playlist?
Usually it's different because I just shuffle my playlist, but at the moment I love the songs "GDFR" by Flo Rida, "Sugar" by Maroon 5, "Centuries" by Fall Out Boy or any song by Sam Hunt of Florida Georgia Line.
10. What's your go to dance move?
Whatever comes to mind when a good song comes on haha!
11. Before a match, do you prefer to get hyped up with the team, or do you prefer to keep it calm and do your own thing?
I usually try to focus on the upcoming matches, but I love listening to up-beat music and also cheering with my team during the warm up.
12. What are you majoring in and what's your favorite class?
Journalism and my favorite classes at the moment are probably Facility and Event Management or Multimedia Journalism.
13. What makes Coach Stanford the type of coach you love to play for?
Coach Stanford understands the balance between working ourselves 110% but also enjoying our time. Practices are tough, but Coach knows how to help develop our games while still allowing us to have fun together.
14. Who is the funniest person on the team and why?
Everyone has their little, personal quirks, but Daria is pretty funny just because she makes comical remarks and has such a unique Russian accent.
15. Name a teammate who has tons of potential and tell us why?
I think everyone has incredible potential to succeed in collegiate tennis and after graduation, but I think Mary Phillips always gives 100% no matter what she's working on. She's incredibly involved on campus and is a great leader on our team as well.
16. Once you're done at Georgia Southern, what do you want to be remembered as?
I want to be remembered as the teammate who didn't leave anything back. I want everyone to remember me as the hard-working teammate who was not only a great friend and teammate but also made the most of her time in Statesboro.
17. What is your plan once you graduate?
I'm currently in the job-search process and hope to find a job with either a communications position in the tennis world or any other communications job in the sports world. I love sports and everything about media and communication, so I hope to pursue that in the upcoming months.
18. Do you like playing singles or doubles more and why?
I grew up playing more singles than doubles, but I've come to love doubles just as much. It's really fun to play with my teammates in doubles and not only have fun but also work hard together towards the same goal.
19. If you and "Gus" were going to be in a movie, what type of movie would it be and what characters would each of you play?
Definitely a comedy, and I think we would just be the two stars who had a great time on-set and enjoyed ourselves. Gus seems like a comical guy, so it would have to be a funny movie!
20. What do you want to say to the fans who have watched you play during your time at Georgia Southern?
I absolutely love having fans at our matches, so I want to thank anyone who has watched me play during my career. It's great that people can take time out of their day to watch me and support the team, so the fans are definitely much appreciated!
Coming off an incredible come from behind victory over Troy, the Eagles will return to action Saturday as they host Bethune-Cookman at the Wallis Tennis Center. The match will begin at 10 a.m. and will serve as the GATA game for student-athletes.
