Eagles close spring break trip on Sunday with series finale
ARLINGTON, TEXAS – Georgia Southern Softball dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Texas Arlington to open a three-game set against the Mavericks. The Eagles fell 7-1 in game one, but led early in the second game, only to fall 2-1 as the Mavericks capitalized on a leadoff double in the seventh. Georgia Southern and UT Arlington close the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. (ET).
GAME ONE – GS 1 – UTA 7
Four Georgia Southern errors led to four unearned runs as Arlington took a 7-1 win in the opening game of the series. Two unearned runs in the first, followed by three more runs in the third put the home side up early as starting pitcher Brooke Red left the game after three complete after allowing the runs off six hits.
Marla Thompson came on in relief and threw a quiet fourth inning before the Mavericks tacked on two more in the fifth, and left the bases loaded as Thompson got out of the jam.
Lexi Allen torched a solo home run in the seventh inning to get the Eagles on the scoreboard, but it wasn't enough as Georgia Southern dropped game one.
GAME TWO – GS 1 – UTA 2
The Eagle offense got things going in the fourth inning with a single from Taylor Rogers, and a double from Emily Snider. Rogers was called out at the plate trying to score on the play, but Snider scored later in the inning off Kaitlyn Johnson's RBI single to center.
Starting pitcher Kierra Camp quelled the Mavericks for the first five innings, but UTA got a run by stringing together two hits with two outs to tie the game. A leadoff double, followed by a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to the gap in right ended the game as Arlington took the 2-1 win.
The same two teams return to the diamond on Sunday for the final game of the weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for Noon (CT) / 1 p.m. (ET).
