NEW ORLEANS – The Georgia Southern men's basketball team practiced Friday for the final time before their Sun Belt Conference Tournament opener.
By virtue of finishing second in the league with a 21-8 overall record and 14-6 conference record, Georgia Southern earned a double bye and will play their first game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN3.
The Eagles practiced for about an hour and half Friday at Xavier University of New Orleans. They started with some ball-handling drills, went full-court for a little bit and finished with half-court offensive and defensive work. The Eagles have a brief shootaround at Lakefront Arena Saturday morning before taking the floor for their tournament opener in the afternoon.
"We've had two very good days of prep since we got down here to New Orleans," said Georgia Southern coach Mark Byington. "The guys are excited to play, and we're all anxious to get on the court. When everybody else starts playing, that's when you really want to get out there. We're focused, we've had great prep, we're excited to play and we can't wait for Saturday."
The tournament opened Thursday night with Texas State upsetting UT Arlington and South Alabama topping UALR. Members of the Eagle coaching staff were there to scout both contests.
The team will have a study hall session Friday afternoon and then attend the last game of the day, featuring ULM against South Alabama at 7:30 p.m. local in Lakefront Arena. The winner will be the Eagles' opponent tomorrow. Following the contest, the Eagles will meet back at the hotel for a scouting report and brief walk-through.
"We've split our prep so far 50-50, getting ready for South Alabama and ULM, and then once we know the team we're going to play tonight, we'll put together the final scouting report," said Byington. "The good news is that we've played everybody twice so there's a lot of familiarity, but there is a quick turnaround for tomorrow once we find out who we play."
Should the Eagles win Saturday's game, the Sun Belt Tournament championship game is scheduled for Sunday, at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2 in Lakefront Arena.
Students can get free admission to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by showing their valid school ID at the ticket window.
Ticket booklets are also still available for the tournament for $99 and give fans a chance to see every game. Eagle fans can purchase their tickets through the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS.
