Softball Sweeps New Mexico in Non-Conference Doubleheader

Eagles take both wins in game played at College of Charleston

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. –  Georgia Southern softball returned to winning ways on Thursday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over New Mexico at the Patriot's Point Sports Complex. The Eagles took the opener 4-2 in nine innings. Georgia Southern completed the sweep with a conventional 4-2 win over the Lobos. Leadoff hitter Taylor Rogers tallied four hits to pace the Eagles.

"I thought we did a nice job defensively and with our pitching," said Head Coach Annie Smith. "Brooke and Kierra both threw great games, and we had a lot of diving plays.  We were heads up and solid out there.  Michelle played great at 3rd, and Alesha and Lexi both made diving plays up the middle for us. We did a great job at the plate, and had timely hitting up and down the lineup getting key hits to drive in those extra runs."

-GAME ONE – GS 4 – NEW MEXICO 2 – 9 Innings

An RBI single from Alesha Mann in the ninth, followed by a Lobo fielding error gave Georgia Southern two runs in the frame and pushed the Eagles to a 4-2 win to open the day.

Taylor Rogers went 3-for-5 in the game with a run scored in the win. The Eagles got a run in the first, but saw New Mexico level the score in the sixth inning. The game went to extra innings, and both teams got a single run in the eighth to open play with the international tiebreaker. After two runs for the Eagles in the top of the ninth, starting pitcher Brooke Red induced a pair of pop ups and struck out the final out to end contest.

Red went the distance, allowing a season-low three hits and one earned run. She struck out three and worked around three walks in the victory to improve to 4-7 on the season.

-GAME TWO – GS 4 – NEW MEXICO 2

The Eagles staked themselves to a 4-0 lead through six, but a pair of Lobo runs in the seventh cut the final result to 4-2 as New Mexico made things interesting down the stretch. Overall the Eagles tallied 10 hits with Snider, Lexi Allen, and Breanna McLendon each taking a pair of hits.

A triple from Kaitlyn Johnson, who made her first start of the season in game two, drove in a pair of runs in the third inning, while two more were played by Allen and McLendon off singles in the sixth. Two doubles and a squeeze play from New Mexico in the seventh plated a pair of runs. A line out with the tying run aboard, however ended the game and handed the Eagles their second-straight win.

Kierra Camp was effective in the circle, working around seven hits with one strikeout to pick up the win. She improved to 2-4 on the year.

Georgia Southern hits the road over the next week for the annual spring break road trip. The trip features games at UL Lafayette, Texas, and UT Arlington. The swing begins on Monday against the Ragin' Cajuns.
