NEW ORLEANS – It was a long day of travel for the Georgia Southern men's basketball team as the Eagles made their way to New Orleans Wednesday for this week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
An early wake-up call preceded a 6:45 a.m. practice session in Hanner Fieldhouse. After a couple hours on the floor, the team loaded up a charter bus for a 10 a.m. departure to Atlanta.
The Eagles arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport just before 1 p.m. and grabbed a quick bite to eat before boarding a plane to New Orleans at around 2:55 p.m. The plane touched down in New Orleans at around 4:10 p.m. local time, and the team made the short drive down I-10 to the team hotel.
The coaching staff will get together this evening to work on scouting and game prep for Georgia Southern's first opponent. The Eagles, by virtue of finishing second in the league with a 21-8 overall record and 14-6 conference record, earned a double bye and will play their first game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN3. Georgia Southern will meet ether third-seeded ULM, sixth-seeded South Alabama or seventh-seeded UALR in that contest.
"Getting the double bye is big – you want to be in a situation to have the best chance to win the tournament, and now we're in a situation where we're two games away," said Georgia Southern coach Mark Byington. "Our message to the guys is one game at a time, one possession at a time. We don't have a long path to get there at the end but we have to stay focused and work hard and then play really well on Saturday."
The team will go to dinner this evening and then get some needed rest. On tap Thursday is a community service event at Green Charter School in the morning and practice in the afternoon followed by a study hall session in the hotel.
Students can get free admission to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by showing their valid school ID at the ticket window.
Ticket booklets are also still available for the tournament for $99 and give fans a chance to see every game. Eagle fans can purchase their tickets through the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS. By purchasing through the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office, fans can guarantee a seat behind the team bench area.
Should the Eagles win Saturday's game, the Sun Belt Tournament championship game is scheduled for Sunday, at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. All the games will be in Lakefront Arena.
