STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern men's basketball team held a media day in Hanner Fieldhouse Tuesday. The Eagles are set to leave for New Orleans Wednesday following a morning practice session.
Members of the media had opportunities to talk to select Georgia Southern players as well as head coach Mark Byington. The Eagles practiced Monday and took Tuesday off. They will practice in Statesboro before leaving for The Crescent City later in the day. The Eagles will practice in New Orleans on Thursday and Friday in advance of Saturday's game.
The Eagles, by virtue of finishing second in the league with a 21-8 overall record and 14-6 conference record, earned a double bye and will play their first game Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN3. Georgia Southern will meet ether third-seeded ULM, sixth-seeded South Alabama or seventh-seeded UALR in that contest. Should the Eagles advance, the championship game is scheduled for Sunday, at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. All the games will be in Lakefront Arena.
"Tournament basketball is different, and the more tournament game experience you have, the better," said Byington. "Whether it's Southern Conference or another conference, it's still pressure basketball – it's win or go home. A couple guys have experience with that from last year, winning two games in the Southern Conference Tournament, and Trent Wiedeman has played in a lot of tournament games and a couple of conference championship games. So we'll lean on those guys' experience and try to prep them as a coaching staff the best we can."
Students can get free admission to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament by showing their valid school ID at the ticket window.
Ticket booklets are also still available for the tournament for $99 and give fans a chance to see every game. Eagle fans can purchase their tickets to follow the Eagles to New Orleans through the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS or visiting the Cowart Building adjacent to Paulson Stadium. By purchasing through the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office, fans can guarantee a seat behind the team bench area.
