Women’s Basketball hosts free exhibition game Nov. 10 at Hanner Fieldhouse
STATESBORO, Ga. – When Georgia Southern women's basketball hosts its first exhibition game of the season against Coastal Georgia on Nov. 10, Eagles fans will get their first look at the extensive changes the NCAA has made to the sport of women's basketball.
Admission to Tuesday's exhibition game will be free. Georgia Southern is sponsoring a canned food drive and fans are encouraged to bring canned foods to donate to the Statesboro Food Bank.
Structure is the biggest change being made to the game as two 20 minute halves will now be replaced by four 10-minute quarters, with only one media timeout per quarter allowed, set for the first dead ball stoppage at the under five-minute mark. Also, the first team-called timeout of the second half will be stretched into a media timeout.
Each team will be allowed four fouls per quarter, with the team shooting two free throws on the fifth. The new rules also state that, rather than shooting one-and-one, the team automatically shoots two on the fifth foul. Fouls will reset at the end of each period.
If a player fouls out of a game, the time-limit to replace a disqualified player has been reduced to 15 seconds. However, if the head coach fails to replace the disqualified player before the second horn, the coach will be given a bench technical foul.
The NCAA has also made rule changes in regards to called timeouts. Now, each team will have three 30-second timeouts and one 60-second timeout with three carrying over into the second half. The team with a possession in the final 59.9 seconds of the fourth quarter and overtime periods has the option to call a timeout and advance the ball to the 28-foot mark in the frontcourt.
Lastly, in an effort to improve overall fan experience, bands or amplified music can now be played during any dead ball situation. Previous rules allowed music to be played only during timeouts and intermission.
"The new rules will change the game tremendously," Georgia Southern women's head basketball coach Kip Drown said. "I'm anxious to see the new quarter rule in place. I think it creates more end of game situations for us. The team could potentially have six possible possessions of scoring without the other team touching the ball, and to me that's an awful lot in the game of basketball. It could help us some, and it could hurt us some."
The rule that will have the most impact on the team, however, will be the advancement of the basketball in the last 59.9 seconds.
With this new system set in place, Drown has been working with the team to prepare for Tuesday's exhibition and the home opener the following Sunday.
"We have Sun Belt officials coming in to visit with the team to go through the rules," Drown said. "We'll get into a lot of special situations to get ready for the start of the season."
Tuesday's exhibition is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at Hanner Fieldhouse. Regular season begins Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. with the home opener against the Lipscomb Bisons.
