KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Rain overnight and this morning washed out the final round of the Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club, and the scores after 36 holes will stand as the final results.
Georgia Southern wound up sixth, two strokes behind College of Charleston (+3) in fifth. Host Charleston Southern (-10) won the tournament, and Virginia (-5) finished second, followed by Duke (-1) and Augusta, which tied for third.
Steven Fisk (-4) tied for fifth in the final tournament of the fall, his fourth top-10 finish of the season. The freshman tied with three others, who were a stroke behind Joey Lane (-5) of Virginia Tech. Robin Petersson (-10) of Augusta took medalist honors.
Most student-athletes finished 5-7 holes today, but standing water on a few of the greens led to the cancellation. Led by Fisk's 4-under-par 68, Georgia Southern shot a 289 in the second round Monday. Archer Price and Cody O'Toole each posted a 73, while Jake Storey shot a 75, and Jonas Vaisanen had a 79.
The story
In the second round Monday, Fisk notched five birdies on the front nine and made the turn at 3-under-par. The freshman moved to 6-under with an eagle on the par-5 10th hole and a birdie on 11. He added birdies on holes 13 and 18 but had double bogeys on holes 12 and 15. Price parred his first five holes and was even after 11. Bogeys on holes 12 and 16 took the sophomore to 2-over, and he birdied hole 18. O'Toole tallied five birdies in the round and played the back nine 1-under.
Quotable from Coach Carter Collins
"We tried to play today, but due to all the rain that Kiawah accumulated, it made the course unplayable. I'm very proud of the discipline we showed in sticking to our game plan this week. We could have executed a little better in some areas, but overall, it was a productive week. I'm also proud of our efforts this fall. With so many new faces in the program, it was important to get everyone some experience and also compete week to week. That can be a tough balance, but the team handled it well and put some good results under our belt, which will help build confidence for our spring season."
