LOS CABOS, Mexico – Henry Mabbett shot a 3-under-par 69, and the Georgia Southern men's golf team posted the lowest team score of the tournament with a 5-under-par 283 on the Desert Course Monday in the second round of the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate.
Georgia Southern (-4) is two strokes behind Georgia State (-6) and three strokes clear of UT Arlington (-1). CSU-Northridge (+2) is fourth, and Santa Clara (+4) is in fifth.
The Eagles are leading the tournament in birdies after logging 28 today. Mabbett's score moved him into a tie for 10th place on the individual leaderboard, and Archer Price carded a 70. Jake Storey shot a 71 and is tied for eighth with teammate Cody O'Toole, who carded a 73. Individual Jonas Vaisanen shot a 73 and is tied for 18th.
The story
Mabbett birdied two of his first three holes and added two more birdies on the front nine and two more on holes 10 and 15 to fall to 5-under for the day. The senior fell two 2-under with a double bogey on hole 17 but rebounded with a birdie on 18. Price had five birdies in his round and was 2-under on his last 13 holes, and Storey played the back nine at 3-under. Fisk had six birdies in his round but was hurt by three double bogeys. Vaisanen duplicated his round yesterday with three birdies and four bogeys.
Quotable from Coach Carter Collins
"We had solid play today by the team. The Desert Course showed a little more teeth, and there was more wind today than in the practice round. We adjusted well and put together five solid scores that helped us climb up the leaderboard. We achieved both of our goals we set for today - getting ourselves in the final group and gaining ground on the leaders going into tomorrow. Tomorrow we are back on the Ocean Course and will need to play a very solid round to get what we want out of this week. Last group experience is very valuable for us and will help us mold into the team we are trying to be."
Next up
The Eagles tee off in a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow in Round 3, which will be played back on the Ocean Course. Georgia Southern will be paired with fellow Sun Belt members Georgia State and UT Arlington.
