Georgia Southern travels south of the border to play in the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate in Mexico. The tournament will use the normal 5-count-4 scoring, meaning the four best scores from a lineup of five student-athletes count towards the team score each round. The Eagles played in two tournaments with 6-count-4 scoring to open the season.
This week's tournament will also be played on two different courses - the Cabo del Sol Ocean Course and the Cabo del Sol Desert Course. The Ocean Course is a Jack Nicklaus design that stretches along the coastline, and The Desert Course is a Tom Weiskopf design, a unique combination of desert and ocean crafted through natural surroundings. The Eagles will play the first and third rounds on The Ocean Course and the second round on The Desert Course.
"We're excited to hit the road again and compete in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "We have been working hard since we got back from the Sun Belt Preview on Sunday to improve from our mistakes and be ready to compete at a high level in our next event. Every year we try and find an event that will not only give us a chance to compete on the national level but also to enhance the student-athlete experience while representing Georgia Southern. This week will also provide a unique twist, being that the event is held on two courses over 54 holes. That will make the practice round day that much more important so we can map everything out and be ready to accomplish our goals this week."
The Eagles have placed in the top-2 in three of their last four tournaments, dating back to last season. Georgia Southern is coming off a second-place outing at the Sun Belt Preview last week.
Freshman Steven Fisk and junior transfer Cody O'Toole have gotten their debut seasons with the Eagles off to good starts. O'Toole placed second at the Invitational at The Ocean Course and 13th at the Sun Belt Preview. Fisk tied for fourth at The Ocean Course and tied for seventh at the Sun Belt Preview. Both student-athletes have a stroke average under 72.
The Eagles are paired with UC Irvine and Santa Clara and will tee off at 9:35 a.m. Sunday.
