Men’s Basketball Completes Week of Service

First full team practice is set for Friday afternoon
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern men's basketball team spent last week out and about in the Statesboro community as part of their annual "Week of Service," a program coach Mark Byington implemented when he came to Georgia Southern in 2013.
The idea is to take a week in the fall before full team practice begins and volunteer in the local community. The team visited the Bulloch County Boys and Girls Club, supporting the children in the art room, learning centers, gym and computer lab, and the Eagles helped demonstrate the importance of books by participating in the Julia P. Bryant Reading Program, where they read stories to pre-K through 2nd grade classes. The Eagles participated in their "Week of Service" for the third straight season.
"Our time is limited during the season, but I wanted to make sure that our guys are getting out in the community," said Byington, who is in his third year with the Eagles. "I think it's important for our guys to reach out and help. I like the fact that they do different things from reading in elementary schools to visiting retirement homes. Anything they can do that opens their eyes and helps out is a benefit to them as much as anybody."
Georgia Southern posted a 22-9 record and advanced to the Sun Belt Championship title game in 2014-15. It was the Eagles' first 20-win season since 2005-06 and their first appearance in their conference championship game since the 1992 Southern Conference title contest. Georgia Southern returns two starters and six lettermen from last year's team, and three student-athletes who redshirted will make their debuts.
