Senior Sets New Pool Record In Final Home Meet
Statesboro, Ga. – Senior Elaina Lanson was named Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association Swimmer of the Week the league announced Tuesday.
Lanson capped off Senior Day on Jan. 24 by securing three victories and a pool record to lead the Eagles past the University of North Florida Ospreys. She won the 50 free with a pool record time of 23.26. Additionally, Lanson anchored the 400 medley relay with a split of 51.69, and posted a split 50.75 in the 400 free relay.
"This is well-deserved recognition for Elaina to be named CCSA Swimmer of the Week," applauded Head Coach Nate Kellogg. "It was one of her goals to reclaim the pool record in the 50 Free and I'm glad she was able to accomplish that goal in her last home meet of her career."
Lanson, who set a new pool record in the 50 free during her first meet of her freshman year, saw the record fall in 2012 to a Florida Gulf Coast University swimmer. Lanson, however, set her sights on setting a new mark and essentially bookending her career at the RAC Aquatics Center with pool records in the 50 free.
"Bringing swimmer of the week honors to Georgia Southern is such a great feeling because it recognizes the hard work and dedication that we have put in all year," said Lanson. "I'm especially happy that it highlights my 50 freestyle swim because it was one of my favorite races of my college career. My family, GSU athletics, and entire team were in attendance when I broke the record I set my first meet freshman year, and rebroke my last meet senior year. It was definitely the way I wanted to end my last meet at home."
Lanson and the entire Eagle squad returns to the pool Friday Jan. 31 as they travel to Wilmington, North Carolina to compete against Liberty, UNC-W, and College of Charleston beginning at 6 p.m.
