STATESBORO, Ga. - After another successful fall season in which the Eagles notched three top-5 team finishes and three top-5 individual finishes, Georgia Southern men's golf sets its sights on the spring campiagn, which opens at the Gator Invitational Feb. 14-15, at Mark Bostick Golf Club in Gainesville, Fla.
Georgia Southern finished strong by placing second of 20 teams at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic in November. Senior Scott Wolfes paced the Eagles on the final day by shooting a course record 63 en route to co-medalist honors. Wolfes' score topped the old mark of 65, set by Georgia Southern alum Aron Price at the 2003 Kiawah Intercollegiate, and is also tied for the lowest in Georgia Southern history with Spence Fulford, Travis Mobley, Richie Bryant and Fred Benton.
Wolfes led the team with a 70.83 scoring average in the fall, and six of his 12 rounds were 70 or under. He placed in the top-10 at all four tournaments, including a tie for third at the Invitational at the Ocean Course, and has now finished in the top-20 in 27 of his 39 collegiate starts. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Month twice in the fall.
Freshman Archer Price came on strong at the end of the fall and tied for fifth at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic after shooting 72-70-71=213 (-3). Seniors Matt Mierzejewski and Kim Koivu along with juniors Henry Mabbett and Andrew Klasing all posted scoring averages just a shade over 74, while Price averaged 73.50 in six rounds.
Golfweek has named Georgia Southern its favorite to win the Sun Belt men's golf championship and named Wolfes and Price to its Midseason All-Conference team.
Georgia Southern hosts the Schenkel Invitational, its annual home tournament, March 20-22 at Forest Heights Country Club, and the Sun Belt Championships are April 19-21, at Raven Golf Club in Miramar, Fla.
