Georgia Southern finishes the bulk of its non-conference slate at the Carolina Classic, where the Eagles will meet two ranked teams in No. 17 North Carolina and No. 16 Kentucky.
Senior
Jamie DeRatt is 330 kills and 294 digs away from 1,000 for her career. Senior
Kym Coley is 370 kills away from 1,000 for her career, and junior
Crysten Curry is 80 blocks shy of 300 for her career, which will put her at seventh on the school's all-time list. Junior
Kat Minnerly needs 478 assists for 2,000.
Coley has been named one of 30 candidates for the Senior Class Award for excellence, both on and off the court. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship in December.
The Eagles will play their first Sun Belt Conference match at Troy Wednesday, Sept. 17. Georgia Southern hosts its first Sun Belt matches next weekend, taking on No. 24 Appalachian State Friday and Arkansas State Sunday.
Georgia Southern returns five starters from last season's 28-6 team, which tied the school record for wins in a season.
The Eagles have moved from the Southern Conference, their home for the previous 22 seasons, to the Sun Belt Conference.
Georgia Southern was picked third in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, and
Jamie DeRatt and
Kym Coley each garnered preseason all-league recognition. Coley was named all-tournament at the Active Ankle Challenge Aug. 30.
