Cross Country Opens Season at Carolina Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. - First-year Head Coach Kelly Carter and the Georgia Southern cross country team open their season at the Carolina Invitational in Columbia, S.C. tomorrow. The Carolina Invitational is the first of two-straight meets in Columbia for GSU. Saturday's meet will be run at Hilton Field at Fort Jackson and starts at 9 a.m.

COACH CARTER AT THE HELM
Head Coach Kelly Carter joined the Georgia Southern Athletic program on July 17th, 2014 and has had just 44 days to prepare the Eagles for their first meet at the Carolina Invitational on Aug. 30. Carter has over 15 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level. He came to GSU after three years as an assistant at Middle Tennessee State.

Georgia Southern cross country opens the 2014 season with a roster of eight student-athletes, who are all either a freshman or sophomore in the program. Returning from last year's squad are sophomores Leigha Long, Ashton Lord and Brooke Stanley.
FIRST YEAR IN SUN BELT
Georgia Southern Athletics became a full member of the Sun Belt Conference officially on July 1, 2014, and the Eagles will compete in the Sun Belt Cross Country Championships on Nov. 11 in Mobile, Ala.
SUN BELT PRESEASON POLL
Georgia Southern was selected ninth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll. Coach Carter sees the poll as "something for our young ladies to strive for. Our goal is to place the highest we have ever placed in conference competition." Arkansas State was picked first in the league, while UT Arlington received the second largest number of points.
LORD LOOKS TO BUILD ON FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN
Ashton Lord returns after a stellar freshman campaign and is looking to build on her first year in Statesboro. Lord finished first among her teammates in each of the first four meets of the season. She posted a season-best time of 20:07.37 at the Will Wilson Citadel Invitational and ran a 20:50.27 at the Southern Conference Championships.
SCHEDULE RELEASED
Cross country's schedule was released on Thursday and includes six meets. The schedule opens on Aug. 30 with the Carolina Invitational and also includes the Disney Cross Country Classic, which will be aired on watchESPN.com. The Sun Belt Cross Country Championships take place on Nov. 2 in Mobile, Ala.
