STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Cross Country opens a new era in 2014 with a new conference, several new faces and some new destinations on its 2014 schedule. The Eagles open their inaugural season in the Sun Belt Conference at a familiar course as they travel to the Carolina Invitational at Hilton Field at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, S.C., for a 5K race Saturday, August 30th at 9 a.m.
"With a young team, it was really important for us to put together a schedule that would challenge our young ladies and allow them to be successful," said Head Track and Field and Cross Country Coach Kelly Carter. "With such a young team, we want them to be prepared for all situations. We go to South Carolina twice and will head to some new events. We're really looking forward to everything being new."
Two weeks after the opener, Georgia Southern returns to the same course for the USC Open #1, a 5K race set for a 9 a.m. start on Saturday, September 13th. Georgia Southern will race three times in the month of October, beginning Saturday, October 4th at the Jacksonville State University Foothills Invitational and complete the regular season November 2nd in Mobile for the Sun Belt Conference championships.
Recently reconfigured, the course for the 19th annual Disney Cross Country Classic will welcome collegiate competitors on Friday, October 11th for its 5K event. This is the first trip to the state of Florida for the Georgia Southern Cross Country team since 2002 and the event will be streamed live on WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN mobile app.
The Eagles head to Johns Island, S.C., for the College of Charleston Invitational, the final meet of the regular season on Friday, October 17th before the Sun Belt Conference Championships. The 5K race will go off at 5 p.m. with the course set for Trophy Lakes.
The Cross Country team will be the first to compete for a Sun Belt Conference championship as the earliest post-season event on the league calendar on Sunday, November 2nd. Battleship Memorial Parkway will be the site of the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Championships as South Alabama plays host to the league event for the first time since 1989.
"Our goal for this season is prepare our young ladies to race and getting them mentally ready to compete for each and every event as well as for the conference meet in November," Carter said. "First and foremost, we're building team camaraderie and unity so they hold each other accountable for what they are supposed to do."
