Five Eagles carry perfect 4.0 GPAs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference honored 16 Georgia Southern student-athletes for the spring semester on its Academic All-Conference Team, announced Wednesday.
The SoCon Tournament Champion Baseball team led the way for Georgia Southern as four student-athletes earned the honor, while three student-athletes from women's outdoor track & field, softball and women's tennis received the accolade. Additionally, five student-athletes – Ashleigh Rasheed (w. track & field), Shelby Morrill (softball), Brooke Red (softball), Paola Garrido (w. tennis) and Mary Phillips Smith (w. tennis) posted a 4.0 grade point average.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently-concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
More than 300 student-athletes earned spots on the spring 2014 Academic All-Southern Conference Team. Each of its 11 institutions had at least 12 honorees, representing the sports of baseball, softball men's and women's golf, men's and women's outdoor track & field, and men's and women's tennis.
A spring-record 14 student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages.
