Four team members travel to Athens
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Four members of the Georgia Southern Track & Field team will travel this weekend to the Georgia Invitational for the chance to improve their marks in preparation for the NCAA Division I East Region Preliminary Round. Five-time SoCon Long Jump champion Jasmin Walker will compete in the Long Jump hoping to add more distance to her personal best 6.12m (20'1") she recorded at the SoCon championship. She will also race the 100m Dash.
Joining Walker in the Long Jump will be Alyssa Felton, who will add another rep in the 100m Hurdles to her experience. Jordan Fordham, the anchor leg of the University and SoCon record 4X100m Relay team will race in the 100m event and sophomore Ashleigh Rasheed will have her first opportunity to concentrate on the Triple Jump this weekend at the Spec Towns facility after participating in several events in previous meets.
"For this weekend, our main objective is to get a competition in and to get back on track, so to speak," said Head Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey. "Coming off of the week of finals, we want to get back into a regular routine, mentally and physically. In particular, for Ashleigh, we wanted to give her an opportunity to reach some goals in the Triple Jump on fresh legs. At SoCon, she had a personal best in the Triple Jump within the same hour that she competed in the 800m for the Heptathlon, so she is going to focus just on the Triple Jump right now."
Walker, Felton, graduating senior Aarian Tipton and Jordan Fordham, who set the University and SoCon record in the 4X100m Relay at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships last month with a 44.50, are expected to compete in the East Region Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Florida, at the end of the month.
