Senior pitcher earns ninth career weekly honor
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern pitcher Sarah Purvis earned her fifth SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor of the year and her ninth career weekly award for another stellar week in the pitching circle. The Warner Robins, Ga. native recorded 20 strikeouts in the weekend series against Appalachian State.
The senior pitcher posted a 2-0 record by tossing a pair of complete games in the series against Appalachian State. Purvis pitched a shutout in the 4-0 victory that started the weekend with 12 strikeouts to match her season-high. That win gave Purvis the Georgia Southern career wins record, passing Aimee Littlejohn's total of 54 career wins.
In the series finale, Purvis picked up her 15th win of the season, holding the Mountaineers to just three runs with eight strikeouts. The runs for the Mountaineers snapped Purvis' scoreless streak at 26.0 innings of work without allowing a run.
With the award, Purvis matched Brooke Loudermilk (Chattanooga) and Beth Alexander (Chattanooga) for the league record with nine career pitcher of the week honors. She is the second pitcher in league history to score five Pitcher of the Week awards in one campaign, joining Western Carolina's Mendy McKenzie in the 2006 season.
