STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Track and Field team departs Friday for Spartanburg, S.C., to compete in its final Southern Conference Outdoor Championships this weekend. The Eagle Women are one of 11 teams competing for the 2014 title in 21 events. The Viking Athletic Complex at Spartanburg High School will serve as the venue for the meet with the Hammer Throw contested at the nearby USC Upstate campus.
"It's always our goal to go out and leave a legacy," said Georgia Southern Track & Field Coach Marlo Mincey. "We want to break as many conference records as we can break and be one of the best Georgia Southern teams to ever come through the Southern conference. We can leave our mark and make sure they are happy to see us go."
Georgia Southern finished third in the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Championship held at the Eagles' home track and field complex. Twenty-five Eagles scored points in last year's meet with junior Jasmin Walker claiming her second-straight outdoor Long Jump title and the 4x100m Relay team coming with a hundredth of a second of tying the SoCon record. The Eagles last won the outdoor team title in 2007.
Weather has impacted the Eagles in both competition and training this year with limited reps in some events, but Coach Mincey still expects to see big things from her team.
"We haven't had an opportunity to train as much we have been and we've made a lot of day to day changes in training because of the weather," Mincey said. "Our student-athletes have stayed invested and we have had some nervous energy on the line and sometimes that nervous energy carries over to big times. We've been indoors, we haven't been able to use a lot of the things like blocks, and the other implements we use to run fast. I think they're really invested and focused."
One event where Georgia Southern has had razor-sharp focus and a strong hold on success is the Long Jump with an Eagle winning this outdoor event every year since 2005. Walker led a total of three Eagles in the top eight places in last year's event in Statesboro. The Long Jump final begins Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
The Eagles are traditionally strong in sprint events with four individuals currently in ranked in the SoCon top 10 for both the 100m and 200m events. Last month, Walker ran a 11.727 for the second-fastest time in Georgia Southern history. She leads Jordan Fordham, Aarian Tipton and Alyssa Felton in the 100. Tipton tops the list in the 200m as her 24.10 ranks third-best on the Eagles' all-time list. Walker, Fordham, who finished third in the indoor event this winter, and freshman Asha Stegall round out the top 10.
Stegall, who posted a 55.31 time in the 400m Dash earlier this season and will compete in that event this weekend. Her time at the UNF Spring Break Invitational was the third-best in Eagle history and the lowest time since Rashedah Arnold set the record in 2007 (54.84). She will also run a leg of the 4x400 Relay.
In their final SoCon championships, twin sisters Dana and Deanna Edwards look to leave their marks as well. Both will compete in the 100m and 400m Hurdles with Deanna coming off a personal best at the Spec Towns Invitational two weeks ago. Earlier this month, Dana ran the second-fastest time in the 400m Hurdles event and she will also run the lead leg of the 4x400m Relay.
Lauren Toomer set her personal best in the 100m Hurdles running into the wind at the FSU Relays. Her PR in the 400m Hurdles came at the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens in the last race for the Eagles before this weekend.
Eagle recordholder in both the 800m and 1500m events, Sherril McFarlane will compete in the trials of the 800m trials Friday and the 1500m final on Saturday.
Saturday's competition begins with the Hammer final at 8:30 a.m. at USC Upstate. Stephanne Henzler added her name to the all-time bests lists with the No. 3 spot for the Hammer with her 48.76 (160') mark last month at the UNF Spring Break Invitational. Henzler, who ranks fifth in that even in the conference, is also slated to compete in Discus and Javelin.
Senior Ashley Thomas and freshman Kelsey Arnold join Henzler in the Hammer Throw and Discus and will represent the Eagles in the Shot Put.
Sophomore Ashleigh Rasheed finished second overall in her first Heptathlon in 2013 and had top-eight finishes in the individual Long Jump and Triple Jump events. She currently ranks third overall in the conference in the Triple Jump and will compete in that event, and the Long Jump, this weekend.
The Eagles' 4X100m Relay team, comprised of the Felton, Walker, Tipton and Fordham is ready to attack the Georgia Southern record with the hopes that the SoCon record will also fall by the wayside as well. The 4X400m Relay team posted the third-best time in program history in March with a 3:42.30 and took third place at the FSU Relays.
