Eagles to compete in 14 events in one of the state’s premiere Division I events
Coach's Corner with Track & Field Head Coach Marlo Mincey
STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia Southern Track & Field makes its first-ever trip to the Spec Towns Invitational this weekend at with the Eagles competing in 14 events at Georgia's Forrest "Spec" Towns" track facility. Live results can be followed here: http://www.spato.us/cresults/2014/spectownsinvite/.
"This is the time of the year when everyone is ready to run fast and compete hard," said Head Coach Marlo Mincey. "Coach Norton (UGA's Head Coach) was adamant about keeping the meet highly competitive, so to get an entrance, we're really excited about that, and we want to show up and do our best."
It's been nearly a decade since the Eagles competed at the Spec Towns Invitational and Coach Mincey notes that this meet is more of a "quality" meet than a "big" meet with numerous teams. It will be the fastest Division I meet in the state until last-chance and postseason meets. This weekend's team competition also marks Georgia Southern's only meet in Georgia, and an opportunity for the families of the Eagle student-athletes to see them compete.
Even with the best time in the conference in the 4X100m Relay, the Eagles look improve upon their result from last weekend and aim to break the University record. Throwers Ashley Thomas and Kelsey Arnold will compete in all three implements with Stephanne Henzler competing in the Discus and Hammer, the latter an event where she already has the third-best mark all-time.
The Eagles have seven entries in the 200m Dash and five in the 100m Hurdles this weekend. Senior Dana Edwards will compete in the 100m Hurdles and the 400m event as well as as the lead leg for a 1600m Relay team. Freshman Asha Stegall, with the third-best time in Georgia Southern history in the 400m will race in that even, in the 200m and will take the baton from Edwards in the 1600m Relay. Ashleigh Rasheed is scheduled for the Triple Jump, Long Jump, 100m Hurdles and is a member of one of Georgia Southern's 1600m Relay teams.
This is the last regular-season meet for the Eagles until their last Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field championships at the end of April. Coach Mincey wants to make sure her team is sharpening their performances and focus.
"Staying mentally engaged (is important)," Mincey said. "We need to stay focused on what we came to accomplish and there are events where we want to see fast times in and others where we want to see race strategy get better. They are excited and we are probably more mentally prepared to do well than we have been at other meets."
