STATESBORO, Ga. – After all the adulation – the text messages, the emails, the media interviews, the new Twitter follows, the new Facebook fans, the outpouring of support – it's time for the Georgia Southern golf team to turn the page on its storybook Schenkel Invitational title.
"It was a special, special weekend and something I know the players and I will never forget," Georgia Southern coach Larry Mays said about winning the Eagles' home tournament for the first time in school history. "It was hard to keep up with text messages Sunday night."
The Eagles have had over a week to soak it in and will return to action at the FAU Slomin Center Invitational, hosted by Florida Atlantic at The Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Fla., this weekend. The 54-hole tournament begins Friday with 18 holes scheduled each day.
Normally, warm, sunny weather is abundant in South Georgia this time of year, but this season has been a little different. The Eagles are hoping the trip to South Florida will bring plenty of high temperatures and sun-filled, blue skies.
"We're hoping to dry out and warm up," joked Mays.
The FAU Slomin Center Invite is one of two tournaments left on the schedule for Georgia Southern before heading to Pinehurst, N.C., for its final Southern Conference Championship April 20-22 at National Golf Club.
Mays and the Eagles hope the confidence gained from winning the Schenkel, with its customary difficult field, including six teams in the top-50 in the country this year, will carry over for the rest of the season.
"We did two things well that we've talked about all year," said Mays. "We got off to a good start in the tournament, and we had four or five guys playing well at the same time. We had four guys who had a chance to win that tournament at the end, and that's what you need against a field of that caliber."
The Eagles will make one change to the lineup for this week. Henry Mabbett, who shot a 213 (-3) and tied for fourth as an individual at the Schenkel, will be in the GSU quintet this weekend. Scott Wolfes, coming off individual medalist honors at the Schenkel, Will Evans, who tied for fourth, Charlie Martin, who tied for sixth, and Hayden Anderson, who tied for 22nd, will also be in the lineup this weekend.
The last two tournaments as well as the team qualifiers in between the events provide the final opportunities for the Eagle golfers to work their way into the 5-man lineup for the SoCon Championships. Performing well this weekend and again next week at the Mason Rudolph Championship in another loaded field at Vanderbilt will go a long way towards solidifying a position in the lineup.
After more than a week of enjoying the win at the Schenkel, the Eagles will look to turn the page and add to the script in an attempt to make the season one for the history books as well as the Schenkel.
"We have to come down off the high of winning the Schenkel and get back to work," said Mays. "We've been preaching to them all year to dive in the pool and keep your head down and play all 18 holes and then pop your head up and see where we stand, and that will be our approach this weekend."
