Eagle Men’s Golf Tied for Seventh at Wendy’s Kiawah Classic

KIAWAH, S.C. – Kim Koivu shot a 1-under-par 71, and Archer Price carded a 72 to lead the Georgia Southern men's golf team in the first round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Country Club on a windy Sunday afternoon.
Georgia Southern (+13) is tied for seventh with USC Upstate and Marquette. Winthrop (E) leads the field, Missouri (+1) is second and GRU Augusta (+2) is third. Jacksonville State (+7) and Richmond are tied for fourth, and Presbyterian (+10) is sixth.
Koivu is tied for seventh in the individual standings, and Price is tied for 11th. Scott Wolfes is tied for 25th after carding a 74, while Charlie Martin shot an 84 and Matt Mierzejewski posted an 85.
The Eagles played just 18 holes Sunday but there were enough momentum swings for an entire tournament. Two triple bogeys and a double on 18 hurt Georgia Southern today.
"We got off to a solid start, then stumbled in the middle of the round, fought back with a good bit of birdies on the back until losing a lot of shots on the last two holes," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "This course is extremely tight, and we need to do a better job of controlling our tee shots."
Koivu finished strong, playing his final six holes at 3-under to go from 2-over to 1-under for the day. The senior was solid with two birdies and three bogeys on the front nine.
Price parred the first nine holes and logged birdies on holes 10 and 15 to move to 2-under on the afternoon. The freshman's only blemish of the day came on 18, a double bogey that gave him a 72.
Wolfes had three birdies on his first 10 holes to move to 3-under was 2-under heading into 17, but the senior was 4-over on his last two holes to finish with a 74.
"We have a great opportunity tomorrow to bounce back with a round that will get us back in contention," said Collins.
Second round action is set for tomorrow with the Eagles paired with USC Upstate and Marquette. Georgia Southern will tee off hole 10 at 9:29 a.m.
