Reynolds’ Six-Touchdown Day Leads Navy Past Georgia Southern

Eagles maintain top rushing average in the nation with 276 yards in second half

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for a career-high 277 yards and accounted for seven touchdowns, and Navy celebrated its Senior Day by snapping Georgia Southern's seven-game win streak with a 52-19 victory over the Eagles Saturday afternoon in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Matt Breida rushed 17 times for 210 yards and two scores, including an Eagles' season-long TD run of 88 yards, to lead Georgia Southern (8-3). It was the sophomore's seventh game with 100 or more yards rushing, second with over 200 yards and the two scores were his Sun Belt Conference leading 15th and 16th touchdowns of the year.

Kevin Ellison rushed for 47 yards and threw for 59, while L.A. Ramsby rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown, his 11th of the season. Favian Upshaw had six carries for 60 yards.

Reynolds ran for six touchdowns and completed 5-of-8 passes for 71 yards and another score for Navy (5-5), and his 277 yards were the most by a quarterback in school history.

In a battle of the top two rushing teams in the country, Navy outgained Georgia Southern 394-375 on the ground, and the Midshipmen scored 31 straight points after surrendering the first touchdown of the game. Navy also won the turnover battle with three takeaways and did not have a penalty in the contest. The Eagles were flagged seven times for 65 yards.

"We did a really poor job with ball security; you are not going to beat these guys being minus-3 in the game," said Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz. "You have to play a clean ball game against these guys, and we had too many foolish penalties that put us in bad field position or bad down and distance situations."

After leading 17-7 at the half, Navy took the second half kickoff and went 74 yards in five plays to open a 24-7 advantage early in the third. Reynolds did most of the work with 52 yards on the ground and a 22-yard completion through the air to Ryan Williams-Jenkins, and Reynolds found the end zone on a 22-yard touchdown run.

A 37-yard run by Breida helped the Eagles move the ball to the Navy 17-yard line, but the drive stalled in part because of a holding penalty. The Eagles tried a 44-yard field goal that knuckled wide left.

Reynolds connected with Demond Brown for a 33-yard pass that put the Midshipmen at the Eagle 1-yard line, and Reynolds went over the left side for a touchdown and an insurmountable 31-7 lead with 5:11 left in the third.

The Eagles got the offense going again on their ensuing possession, and Breida ran for a 36-yard touchdown to cap a 75-yard drive. Ellison completed two passes for 20 yards to key the score, but the Eagles missed the point after, leaving the margin at 31-13 with 1:27 left in the quarter.

After Reynolds tacked on two more rushing TDs for a 44-13 cushion, Breida broke free for an 88-yard touchdown run down the right sideline midway through the fourth. It was the longest TD run for Georgia Southern this season, the longest against Navy this year and Breida's seventh touchdown run of 50-yards or more.

Georgia Southern went 75 yards in 13 plays on the opening possession of the game, and Ramsby capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. It was Georgia Southern's second-longest drive of the season in terms of time and its longest on the road.

Navy came right back with a 10-play, 62-yard scoring drive on its first possession. The Midshipmen converted a 4th-and-1 from the Eagle 19-yard line with a 3-yard Reynolds run, and Reynolds got the touchdown on a keeper from a yard out to tie the score 7-7 with 2:52 left in the first quarter. Reynolds hooked up with Jamir Tillman for a 14-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter, and Navy opened a 14-7 lead.

"We did a good job of coming out of the gates fast, but for about two and half or three quarters, their defense did a great job against us," said Fritz. "They used their extra week well to prepare for us, and you have to give them credit. Navy runs that triple option to perfection. We didn't execute, and they did."

After an Eagle fumble at the Navy 40-yard line, the Midshipmen went 40 yards and took over three minutes off the clock to tack on a 36-yard field goal by Austin Grebe and open a 17-7 cushion late in the first half.
