RALEIGH, N.C. – Scott Wolfes holed out a 30-yard chip for an eagle on his 34th hole of the day to move into a tie for second, and Georgia Southern is sixth of 17 teams after two rounds of the Wolfpack Intercollegiate at Lonnie Poole Golf Course Monday.
Wolfes (-3) is one stroke behind Adrian Meronk (-4) of East Tennessee State and tied with Temple's Brandon Matthews and NC State's Jacob McBride.
The Eagles (+18) are four strokes behind Seton Hall (+14) in fifth and three strokes ahead of Lipscomb (+21). NC State (-2) leads the field, followed by East Tennessee State (+1), East Carolina (+7) and UNCG (+9).
It was a shotgun start, and the Eagles each struggled with their final three holes of the first round. The 501-yard, par-4 third hole, which played as the second toughest of the day, was particularly unkind to Georgia Southern as the Eagle counters shot a combined 6-over on it. Georgia Southern struggled coming in in the second round as well, with the four counters bogeying the 235-yard, par-3 second hole this time around.
Wolfes shot 70-69=139, and Matt Mierzejewski is tied for 27th after carding a 73-74=147. Henry Mabbett shot 73-77=150, and Kim Koivu equaled that total with a 76-74=150. Charlie Martin carded an 81-78=159.
"It was a good 36-hole day for Scott as an individual but as a team, our putting really held us back," said Georgia Southern coach Carter Collins. "We did a poor job of controlling speed on longer putts and converting putts inside five feet. The effort and attitudes were great all day, and we have a great opportunity tomorrow to clean up our short game and bounce back with a strong final round as we have so far this fall."
Wolfes started on hole 4 today and came out of the gates with a birdie on the first hole of the day. After a bogey on hole 6, he logged another birdie at hole 9 and added three on the back 9 to move to 4-under par, but the senior struggled coming in and shot 3-over on his final three holes for a 1-under-par 70. After a bogey on hole 5 in the second round, he played the next 14 holes 4-under with birdies on holes 9 and 15 and the eagle on hole 1. A bogey on hole 2 gave him a 69.
Mierzejewski started on hole 5 and was even through 17 holes in the first round, with two birdies and two bogeys, but doubled the third hole to post a 73. The senior got off to a great start in round 2 with birdies on holes 9 and 10 to move to 2-under but had three bogeys over the next eight holes to fall to 1-over. He birdied hole 1 but notched three straight bogeys and finished with a 74.
Mabbett started on hole 4 and posted two birdies and two bogeys to play his first 16 holes even in the first round, but the junior got two bogeys on his last three holes to shoot a 73. He was even after the first six holes of the second round but struggled from there, posting a 77.
Koivu started on hole 6 and struggled out of the gate in the first round with bogeys on 8 and 9 and a double on 12. He birdied 15 and had just one blemish the rest of the round for a 76. The senior played his first seven holes of round 2 even and was 1-over heading into his final four holes. He posted a birdie one hole 4 but bogeyed the other three for a 74.
Martin just could not get it going today and was hurt by three double bogeys in the first round and two in the second.
The third and final round is set for tomorrow, and the Eagles will be paired with Seton Hall and UNCG and tee off hole 1 at 8:50 a.m.
