Six Eagles score in double figures en route to the 103-76 win
STATESBORO, GA. - Georgia Southern recorded its first home SoCon victory and the program's largest victory to date over Appalachian State on this date in 1993. The postgame story from that victory follows.
Georgia Southern Men's Basketball hosts Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon, January 11th, at 2 p.m. inside Hanner Fieldhouse. The game is Bulloch County Board of Education and Service Members Appreciation Day. All employees of the Bulloch County Board of Education as well as Bulloch County Fire, Police and EMS can purchase tickets for just $1.
STATESBORO – Dexter Abrams scored 20 points, all in the second half, to lead six Eagles in double figures as Georgia Southern recorded a 103-76 Southern Conference victory over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse. The win was the first SoCon victory at home for the Eagles and extends the nation's longest home win streak to 16 games. Southern improves to 8-2, 2-0.
Chris Birden added 16 points for the Eagles, while Charlton Young (15), Calvin Sinkfield (14), Brian Wallace (11) and Warren Johnson (10) also crossed into double figures. Young paced Southern with 11 assists, while Sinkfield grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Billy Ross tallied a game-high 27 points and Ricky Nedd added 20 for the visitors (4-4, 1-1).
Georgia Southern scored the game's first two points, before a three-pointer by Appalachian made the score 3-2 just 1:21 into the contest. But the Eagles engineered a 12-2 run to grab a nine-point advantage (14-5). The lead was 10, 29-19, with 4:29 before intermission before the Eagles ended the period on a 15-5 run to double their margin, 44-24.
In the second period, Georgia Southern connected on 61.5% of its shots to keep the lead throughout. The Mountaineers cut the lead to 17 on two occasions in the first two minute, then trailed by 29 in the final minute.
The Eagles host defending conference champion East Tennessee State tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., while Appalachian State travels to The Citadel.
