BOONE, N.C. – A late 13-0 run by Appalachian State doomed Georgia Southern Men's Basketball on Saturday afternoon in the High Country. Georgia Southern got a career-best 21 points from
Brian Holmes and made 11 three-pointers on the day while Appalachian State went .500 from beyond the arc and won the rebounding battle 43-34 to take their first league win of the year.
"Appalachian State went after us on the inside, and to their credit, they shot the ball very well today," said Head Coach
Mark Byington. "We only had one offensive rebound in the first half, and we take that as a lack of effort. We addressed it at halftime, but it is something that we're going to have to work on. We didn't play our best game tonight and we'll have some things to fix before Thursday's game."
The Mountaineers improve to 5-13 and 1-4 in league play, taking their first win over a Division I opponent. Georgia Southern falls to 9-10 on the year with an even 2-2 SoCon mark. Saturday's contest is the final regular season SoCon meeting before both sides go to the Sun Belt Conference next season.
Holmes had a career night shooting the ball with 21 points and 6-of-10 shooting from downtown. He was 7-of-14 from the field overall.
Jelani Hewitt scored 19 points to raise his career total to 998 career points. The redshirt junior was 4-of-8 from the bonusphere and 5-of-15 from the field.
Appalachian State had five players in double figures, led by 17 from Tab Hamilton. Chris Burgess scored 15 while Michael Obacha posted14 points. Tommy Spagnolo earned a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Ty Toney closed out the Mountaineer high scorers with 11.
The Mountaineers were without the services of Jay Canty who injured his hand during practice on Friday. Canty averaged over 17 ppg to lead the Apps in scoring.
Georgia Southern trailed by eight at the halftime break and responded to take the lead with 14:52 left in the game. The Eagles kept the margin close through the middle phase of the second half, but a 13-0 run by the Mountaineers extended the lead out to 18 points with four minutes left. The visitors mounted a late charge, but could only get within 11 points in the final two minutes of the contest.
The Eagles return home for Thursday night's game against Wofford which can be seen live on WSAV-DT2 as part of the channel's WSAV Basketball Blitz series.
