STATESBORO, GA. – In this week's look back, Georgia Southern Athletics takes a look at a January 16th, 1992 win over Centenary College at Hanner Fieldhouse. In GSU's final TAAC Home Opener, the Eagles romped to a 119-91 win over the Gents.
Tony Windless led the Eagles in scoring with 23 points on 3-of-4 shooting from downtown. Dexter Abrams added 22 points and six rebounds in just 23 minutes of play. As a team the Eagles went 56% from the field.
It was one of 10 times in the 1991-92 season that Georgia Southern scored over 100 points.
Georgia Southern jumped out to a 21-7 lead by the 14:28 mark in the first half and didn't look back from there. The lead grew to as many as 32 before the Eagles took a 54-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
With 4:54 left in the game Joby Powell dropped a thunderous flush to put the Eagles over the 100 point threshold. Moments later, Centenary Head Coach Tommy Vardeman and Steve Roccaforte were ejected, sending the Eagles to the free throw line where GSU made 4-of-6.
The Eagles posted their largest lead of the night, 32 points, with 56.4 seconds left. Nate Taylor scored the final four points for the Gents, adding to his game-high total of 33 points.
