STATESBORO, Ga. - Former major leaguers Ryan Klesko and Scott Fletcher spoke to a large crowd at the fourth annual Evening with the All-Stars banquet inside the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center on the campus of Georgia Southern University.
Klesko and Fletcher shared stories about their playing careers, lives and journey through the game of baseball to a room full of the Georgia Southern baseball team, youth baseball players, community members and supporters of the baseball team.
Klesko spoke about the impact that his mom had on his development in the game of baseball.
"My mom was the one that taught me baseball. She paid for 14 years of hitting and pitching lessons and built a batting cage and pitching mound. Even when I was playing in the major leagues I would get voicemails from her saying 'you are starting your swing early.' 'Your hips are open.' etc."
Fletcher added that baseball was something that he knew would always be a career for him. He mentioned that "coaching is something that I love. It is never work if I am doing something that I love."
Proceeds from the Evening with the All-Stars go to benefit the Georgia Southern Baseball team.
The 2014 baseball season opens on Feb. 14 at Georgia. The Eagles will play their first home contest on Wednesday, Feb. 19 against Georgia Tech at 6 p.m.
