Eagles begin stretch of three straight races with 4K at Atlanta-area meet
STATESBORO, Ga. – With three weeks between its season opener and the Georgia State Invitational Friday, Sept. 20th, the Georgia Southern Cross Country team has spent the last few weeks focusing on training. The Eagles return to competition for the first of three straight weeks of racing tomorrow at the 38th annual GSU Invitational. The Women's 4K race starts at 4 p.m.
"Our team has been training very hard for the last three weeks, but there is no replacement for competition," said Head Cross Country Coach Marlo Mincey. "We'll face a variety of talent at this meet, from the SEC, the Sun Belt, and SoCon, and we're excited about our first and only race in our home state."
Nash Farm Battlefield Park in Hampton, Ga., just south of Atlanta, is the site for the GSU Invitational. Eight teams are currently slated to compete in the 4K race on a course that features multiple grass loops with challenging hills. This is the first time Georgia Southern will participate in this meet and all eight Eagles will compete Friday.
"The last few weeks have been dedicated to some tough training and working with Coach (Adam) Colorito. He has high expectations for our cross country program and it will complement what we do with our track and field programs. Getting prepared for competing, following the race plans, training, all that is challenging, but getting ready for three straight weeks of racing is hard, and getting this experience in invaluable."
