
Former Men’s Basketball Head Coach J.E. Rowe Passes Away

A 1961 graduate of Georgia Southern, Rowe was a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame

STATESBORO, Ga. – Former Georgia Southern Men's Basketball Head Coach J.E. Rowe has passed away at the age of 74.
A member of the Georgia Southern Athletics Hall of Fame, Rowe graduated from Georgia Southern College in 1961 following a standout career with both the baseball and basketball programs. On the diamond, Rowe was a first-team All-American in the 1961 season. In 2013, Rowe was named Alumnus of the Year of the College Health and Human Sciences at Georgia Southern.
On the hardwood, Rowe played in 52 games at guard and scored 606 points for coach J.B. Scearce. He was 271-of-599 from the field (45.2 percent) and shot 68-of-93 from the line (73.1 percent) during his career at Georgia Southern. Rowe grabbed 136 rebounds and passed out 94 assists.
After graduation, Rowe had a brief professional baseball career, playing in the minor leagues for the Raleigh Capitols and the Greenville Spinners in the 1961 season.
Rowe began his basketball coaching career at Atlanta's Avondale High School in 1963 and returned to Statesboro in 1967 to serve under Frank Radakovich for three seasons.
For the 1970-71 season, Rowe was installed as the new head coach and served four seasons at the helm of the Eagles, guiding the program into the Division I era. Rowe finished with a 57-46 record. In his final season, Georgia Southern posted a 19-7 record.
He was a decorated amateur golfer, winning numerous local and state amateur tournaments and carrying a 0 handicap for 20 years. He competed in two U.S. Senior Amateur Opens and was the captain of the Amateur Team for the North Florida PGA Cup Championship, where he led them to back-to-back victories.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at Anastasia Baptist Church in St. Augustine, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Coach J.E. Rowe Scholarship at Georgia Southern University's College of Health and Human Sciences, a scholarship given out on a yearly basis for a high-need student.
