STATESBORO, Ga. – The Carolina Challenge, a 5K race at Ft. Jackson' s Hilton Field in Columbia, S.C., will be the site of the first test for the very young Georgia Southern Cross Country team. The Eagles open their 2013 schedule with the 6 p.m. race Friday evening and all eight members of the team will travel. While this will be the first collegiate race for six freshmen, Georgia Southern is a regular entrant at University of South Carolina season-opening meets, participating in each of the last eight years.
"We are definitely excited about this schedule in terms of the challenges it poses for us in giving us opportunities to improve," said Head Cross Country Coach Marlo Mincey. "For the first time, we have a lot of diversity in the course length and difficulty as we are mixing in some 6K races and some tougher courses. These are the experiences we want -- racing different level courses and to prepare for competing in a 6K regional in the future."
Following the season opener, the Eagles will return to their training regimen until a Friday, September 20th meet at Georgia State. The 38th GSU Invitational will be contested at Nash Park Battlefield in Hampton and Georgia Southern will be included among the field of teams participating from across the southeast. The Eagles will race against Southern Conference competition in two meets held at league schools as The Citadel plays host to the Will Wilson Citadel Invitational on Saturday, September 28th, and three weeks later, at the Blue Ridge Open at Appalachian State Friday, October 18th at 3 p.m.
In preparation for the Southern Conference Championships, Coach Mincey scheduled the Eagles to compete at Birmingham Southern on October 4th to preview the course used for the league meet the next month. Samford plays host to the 29th women's Cross Country Championship November 2nd.
