Eagles Close Regular Season Against Appalachian State

STATESBORO, GA. – The 2013 regular season comes to an end this weekend for Georgia Southern Softball with a three game set against Appalachian State at Eagle Field. Prior to Saturday’s 1 p.m. doubleheader there will be a ceremony to honor seniors from both the Mountaineers and the Eagles. The series concludes on Sunday with a single game which starts at 1 p.m.

Appalachian State leads the Southern Conference with a 16-5 record in league play and a 29-18 overall mark. Georgia Southern enters the weekend with at 12-8 in the league and 26-26 overall. The Eagles can play the spoiler for the Mountaineers who need just one win to guarantee their first SoCon Regular Season Championship in program history. GSU’s seed in next week’s SoCon Tournament is still in flux with the ability to earn a seed between 2nd and 6th depending on results around the league.
Prior to Saturday’s series opener, GSU will honor its 2013 senior class. Alexa Lewis, Andrea Tarashuk and Tabby Douberley will be recognized on the field for their contributions to the program. Lewis enters the weekend set to start her 171st career game on Saturday. Tarashuk ranks seventh all-time at GSU with 35 career doubles as the Eagles’ everyday third baseman for the last three seasons. Douberley has 32 RBIs this season with five home runs to rank as one of the Eagles’ top producers at the plate this season.
The Eagle pitching staff has been outstanding this season in league play, posting a 1.81 team ERA. In nine starts Sarah Purvis has held opponents to a .147 batting average with 54 strikeouts and a 1.37 ERA to go with a 7-1 record. Brooke Red is 2-2 in league play with a 0.91 ERA in 38.2 innings of work.
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series 31-11 and won three of four games over the Mountaineers last season. The Eagles took a 6-0 win over Appalachian State in the quarterfinal round of the SoCon Tournament behind a one-hitter from Purvis.
Sarah Warnock is hitting .389 to pace the Appalachian State offense which is hitting .278 as a unit. Allie Cashion has eight home runs and is hitting .382 with a .702 slugging percentage. The Mountaineer pitching staff has gotten 18 wins from Alissa Schoelkopf with a 3.57 ERA and 11 wins from Shivaun Landeros who has a 4.04 ERA.
The 2013 Southern Conference Tournament is set for next week in Greensboro. Seeds and matchups for the annual tournament will be announced on Sunday evening. The tournament starts on Wednesday morning with the final round set for Saturday afternoon, May 11th.
