Softball Drops Series Finale to Western Carolina, 5-2

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Georgia Southern Softball dropped the rubber match of this weekend’s three-game series to Western Carolina 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in the High Country. GSU took an early lead, but a four-run fourth inning paved the way for the Catamounts to take the win and the series.
The Eagles sprung out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a home run off the bat of Shelby Morrill. The two-run shot was her fourth of the season and the sixth of her career. The long-ball plated Alexa Lewis who walked to open the game.
Sarah Purvis opened the game with three perfect innings before the Catamounts posted four runs in the fourth inning. One RBI by Taylor Sigmon, two from Amber Steinhardt and one off a double by Hayley Pace scored the runs for the hosts which gave WCU the 4-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Sigmon added an insurance run with a solo home run with one out in the inning. It was her seventh home run of the season as the extended the lead to 5-2.
Western Carolina retired the final three batters in order to take the 5-2 win over the Eagles as Georgia Southern fell to 24-25 on the season and 10-7. Western Carolina improves to 18-31 on the season and 8-13 in league play.
The Eagles are back at the friendly confines for the next two weekends to close the 2013 regular season. A series against UNCG is set for next weekend with the final series of the regular season set for Mary 4th and 5th against Appalachian State.
