Softball Back on the Road for Three Games at Western Carolina

STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Softball is back on the road this weekend for a three-game set against Western Carolina. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon that can be seen on CatamountSports.com All Access from 1 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The three-game set is the final regular season road trip for the Eagles who are 23-23 on the season with a 9-5 league record which ranks Georgia Southern third in the SoCon. The Eagles have also won 11-straight contests over the Catamounts who enter the season at 16-30 overall and 6-12 in the league.
Georgia Southern took three games from Samford last weekend behind a one-hit shutout from Sarah Purvis and a two-hit shutout engineered by Brooke Red. Kaitlyn Johnson hit .625 in three-game series to make a bid for SoCon Player of the Week.
Shelby Morrill is hitting .336 to lead the Eagles this season, she has upped that average to .381 (24-of-63) with runners on base. Junior Kourtny Thomas has provided the power this year with 10 home runs to raise her career total to 17. Thomas also leads the Southern Conference with 24 walks this season and ranks fourth in the league for home runs.
Tabby Douberley has driven in 30 runs on the year to lead the team. She has 82 career RBIs and needs just seven more to move into the top-10 in Georgia Southern history.
The Eagle pitching staff has one of the league’s best stables of pitchers behind a 2.36 ERA and a 10-11 record from Sarah Purvis. She has struck out 141 batters. Brooke Red has a 2.46 ERA and a 4-4 record. Allie Miles earned two wins last week to improve to 6-6 on the year with a 3.03 ERA.
Shemekia Scotton leads the Catamount offense with a .296 average, but has missed the last four games. As a team, Western is hitting .239 with 29 total home runs. Seven of those long-balls have come from Heather Chastain and six from Taylor Sigmon.
The Western Carolina pitching staff is anchored by Jordan Garrett’s 10-10 record and 3.34 ERA. She has struck out a league-best 183 batters while opposing hitters are hitting .271 on the year. Malory Broome is 4-7 on the year with a 3.98 ERA and Taylor Sigmon is 0-11 in the circle with a 5.11 ERA in 12 appearances.
Following the series against Western Carolina, Georgia Southern returns home for back-to-back series against Appalachian State and UNCG to close the regular season.
