STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Softball cemented a series sweep over Samford with a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs behind a two-hit shutout by Brooke Red. Tabby Douberley delivered the game-winning RBI by sending shortstop Kourtny Thomas in for the winning run.

The Eagles improve to 23-23 on the season with a 9-5 record in conference play. Samford is 11-27 on the year and falls to 3-12 in the league.

“I was so happy to see Brooke (Red) come out and have a great performance today, our pitchers have done a great job all weekend and I’m proud of them,” said Head Coach Annie Smith. “Kourtny Thomas had a great at bat to get the double and Tabby (Douberley) got a big hit to drive her in.”

After five and a half innings of scoreless play, Georgia Southern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI single by none other than Tabby Douberley. She laced a ball down the line in right to score Kourtny Thomas after the junior doubled earlier in the inning. The RBI was Douberley’s 30th of the season.

Brooke Red delivered an outstanding outing in the circle, striking out five in a complete game shutout. She allowed just two Samford hits as she picked up her seventh win of the season.

Before the game, Georgia Southern Softball honored its alumni in a pregame ceremony that included a ceremonial first pitch by Victoria Standard Davis who was a member of the Georgia Southern Slow Pitch Softball Team between 1980 and 1984.

The Eagles will get some time to rest this week with no midweek game prior to this weekend’s trip to Western Carolina. The Eagles open the three-game set against the Catamounts on Saturday afternoon from 1 p.m. with a doubleheader in the high country.
