STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Softball begins defense of its 2012 Southern Conference Softball Championship this weekend by visiting Elon in the first league series of the 2013 campaign. The Eagles swept the Phoenix last season in a series in Statesboro. The series starts with a Saturday doubleheader from 1 p.m.
Last time out, Georgia Southern (11-10) swept a midweek doubleheader over Jacksonville on a blustery afternoon at Eagle Field. GSU won the opener 9-5 and held on to take a 5-3 win in the finale.
Shelby Morrill paces the GSU offense with a .373 average. She came up a home run shy of hitting for the cycle in game one against Jacksonville. Alexa Lewis was in the running for the program’s first cycle in the game as well, but came up a triple shy of the feat. Kourtny Thomas leads the Eagles’ power numbers with six home runs and a .569 slugging percentage.
GSU’s pitching staff has quelled opposing bats behind six wins and a 1.67 ERA from Sarah Purvis. Allie Miles added two saves on Wednesday night versus Elon while Brooke Red earned the win, her third in game one of the doubleheader.
The Phoenix (9-6) enter league play after splitting a midweek series at Charlotte. Tomeka Watson is hitting .490 to lead Elon’s attack while Kayla Caruso leads the pitchers with a 3.02 ERA and a 4-3 record.
