Softball’s Spring Break Trip Continues with Doubleheader at LSU

BATON ROUGE, LA. – After four games against Minnesota and Florida State this weekend in the FSU Sunshine Classic, Georgia Southern Softball continues its spring break road trip with a pair of games against the LSU Tigers. The Tigers are ranked 13th in last week’s USA Today/NFCA Top-25 Poll. Tuesday’s doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. (ET) / 5 p.m. (CT) from Baton Rouge.
Tuesday’s first game can be seen on Cox Sports Television which is available on Dish Network and Cox Cable Systems in Middle Georgia. Check your local listings for channel information in your area. The Eagles got a day of rest on Monday after arriving in Baton Rouge late Sunday evening. The team toured the French Quarter of New Orleans and dined at the legendary Café Du Monde in Jackson Square.
Georgia Southern enters Tuesday’s doubleheader with a 14-14 overall record while LSU owns a 22-5 overall record.
Shelby Morrill leads the Eagles with a .354 average and a league-best 15 walks. Tabby Douberley has drove in 19 runs while Kourtny Thomas paces the squad with seven home runs to rank third in the Southern Conference.
The Eagle pitchers took a battering this weekend, but still rank third in the Southern Conference with a 2.74 ERA. The pitching stable leads the league with 210 strikeouts behind 110 from Sarah Purvis. Purvis has a 2.08 ERA while Allie Miles ranks fifth in the SoCon with a 2.84 ERA. Sophomore Brooke Red has a 4-2 overall record to go with a 3.14 ERA.
Jacee Blades has a .370 average to lead the Tiger offense which has a .299 team batting average. LSU has out-scored opponents 142-63 with a .443 slugging percentage and 22 home runs. Rachele Fico is the top pitcher for the Bayou Bengals with a 14-3 record and 138 strikeouts in 107.1 innings of work.
This weekend the Eagles travel to another historical city with a three-game set against College of Charleston, trading games on the banks of the Mississippi River for the Ashley River. GSU opens the three-game set on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
