STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball travels back to North Carolina on Saturday for the 2013 regular season finale against the Davidson Wildcats. The game on Saturday afternoon starts at 2 p.m. between the SoCon Regular Season Champions and the Eagles who represent the only blemish on Davidson’s 2012-13 SoCon ledger.
The Georgia Southern Radio Network will have live coverage of the contest starting from 1:30 p.m. inside Belk Arena. Listen to the game on your local affiliate or online at GSEagles.com/Watch-Listen.
On Wednesday night the Eagles took advantage of two big senior outings to take a 66-60 win over UNCG at the Greensboro Coliseum. C.J. Reed scored a season-high 23 points while Cameron Baskerville dropped 19 points and his first double-double since 2010 to take the win. Georgia Southern tallied a season-high 50 rebounds in the win, besting the Spartans’ total by 21.
Earlier this season the Eagles handed Davidson their only SoCon loss with a 70-57 victory over the Wildcats. The Eagles never trailed and were led by Reed with 16 points. Eric Ferguson scored 14 while Marvin Baynham posted 13 points.
The Eagles enter the final day of the regular season third in the SoCon South Division, but eighth place in the overall table. With a win over Davidson the Eagles could earn the sixth seed in the SoCon Tournament. The Eagles would need losses by Western Carolina and Chattanooga in their respective finales to finish sixth, a win by one of those teams would move the Eagles to seventh and a win by both puts the Eagles eighth.
A loss to Davidson would give the Eagles either the eighth or ninth seed in the SoCon Tournament. From there, a Wofford win in their finale gives Georgia Southern the ninth seed and an opening round game against the Terriers. A Wofford loss, coupled with a UNCG win would give GSU the eighth seed and a first round game against UNCG. If both UNCG and Wofford fall in their final game, GSU will face Wofford to open the tournament.
Davidson enters the final game of the regular season riding the fourth longest winning streak in the nation and a 22-7 overall record including a 16-1 league mark. The Wildcats have not lost since falling to Georgia Southern on January 14th and have three starters averaging in double figures. Senior Jake Cohen has 14.9 points per game while De’Mon Brooks is averaging 13.2 and fellow senior Nik Cochran has 10.0 ppg.
The Eagles open the 2013 SoCon Men’s Basketball Tournament next Friday inside Asheville’s U.S. Cellular Center. Tickets for the tournament can be purchased from the Georgia Southern Athletics Ticket Office by calling 1-800-GSU-WINS.
