Men’s Basketball Faces Western Carolina on Pack the House in Pink Night

STATESBORO, Ga. – For the second time in two weeks, Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball will look for a bounce-back win over Western Carolina. The Eagles played one of their best games of the season a fortnight ago against the Catamounts and took the 72-66 win over Western. Georgia Southern faces the Catamounts on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. inside Hanner Fieldhouse following the Women’s Basketball game against College of Charleston which starts from 5 p.m.
Activities surrounding the event will focus on raising awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer and for life-saving research. Pink decorations will welcome patrons inside Hanner Fieldhouse, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the games in the spirit of the event. Both Eagle basketball teams will sport pink shoelaces and socks to show their support, and pink towels will be used during the game on the benches.
The Zeta Tau Alpha sorority will sell pink T-shirts for $15 prior to the game. Zeta Tau Alpha will also hold a cupcake sale at Hanner Fieldhouse on game day and will have sorority members available for pink face-painting. The Phi Mu sorority will hold a $2 raffle for area gift certificates, and all funds will benefit breast cancer research.
The University Programming Board will be sponsoring a Pack the House in Pink Tailgate from 3-5 p.m. in front of Hanner Fieldhouse with free hamburgers and hotdogs and Southern Tide giveaways. The Susan G. Komen Foundation will be on hand distributing information about breast cancer, and Georgia Southern will honor local breast cancer survivors during halftime of both games.
Eric Ferguson scored 23 points, coming one shy of tying his season-high scoring on Thursday night against the Mountaineers. C.J. Reed scored 19 against Appalachian State and is averaging 19.3 points per game over the last three contests. He needs 41 more points to reach 2,000 for his career.
Cleon Roberts scored 17 points on the night, his highest total since the win over Virginia Tech in December. Marvin Baynham added 11 points including a free throw with three seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. GSU enters Saturday’s game at 10-14 on the year and 4-7 in the SoCon.
Western Carolina fell to Davidson 73-59 behind 16 points from both Tawaski King and Trey Sumler, dropping the Catamounts to 8-15 on the year with a 5-6 league mark. Sumler leads Western Carolina with 17.7 points per game, but was held to just seven points in Cullowhee two weeks ago.
Georgia Southern travels to Charleston next weekend for games against The Citadel and College of Charleston in “Chucktown.”
