STATESBORO, GA. – Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball dropped a 53-47 decision to Wofford on Thursday night inside Hanner Fieldhouse in the Eagles’ penultimate home game of the 2012-13 season. Georgia Southern is back in action on Saturday night at 7 p.m. for Senior Night as seniors Cameron Baskerville and C.J. Reed will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
“Tonight’s game boiled down to two things, we gave up 11 offensive rebounds and down the stretch, Wofford made the effort plays that it took to get the win,” said Head Coach Charlton “C.Y.” Young. “We didn’t shoot the ball well tonight, but nights that you don’t shoot the ball well, you’ve got to get rebounds and do the toughness things it takes to win ballgames. We’ve had a chance to win every one of our conference games in the final two minutes, so we’ve got to do a better job of closing games out and making the toughness plays to win ballgames.”
Georgia Southern (11-17, 5-10 SoCon) was led by a team-high 11 points from Eric Ferguson. C.J. Reed scored nine points with eight rebounds. Fellow senior Cameron Baskerville also dropped nine points with a pair of steals. Brian Holmes added seven points in 32 minutes of play.
Wofford (12-17, 6-10 SoCon) was led by 16 points from Karl Cochran while Spencer Collins scored a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Overall, Wofford out-rebounded the Eagles 40-31.
Georgia Southern led just twice in the first half and took their first lead of the second half with 8:38 left in the game on an inside lay-in by Ferguson. That basket was part of a 9-0 GSU run between the 12:26 and 6:57 marks in the second half that saw the Eagles take their largest lead of the contest to that point, four points.
Cleon Roberts scored an old-fashioned three-point play to get the Eagles within just one point at 48-47 with 1:22 left on the clock. That, however, would be as close as the Eagles would gat as the Terriers scored the final five points to take the six-point victory, 53-47.
Georgia Southern hosts Furman for Senior Day 2013 on Saturday night at Hanner Fieldhouse starting at 7 p.m. Georgia Southern Athletics will honor its seniors in a pregame ceremony. Fans are encouraged to wear blue to the game against the Paladins. It is also Family Weekend on the campus and there will be a Student Eagle Club tailgate starting at 5:30 p.m. outside of Hanner Fieldhouse.
