STATESBORO, Ga. – With three wins in three outings, Georgia Southern’s Sarah Purvis has been named SoCon Softball Pitcher of the Week for the opening weekend of the 2013 season. It is the first time since 1997 that an Eagle pitcher has picked up the weekly award in the first weekend of play.
Purvis went the distance in a two-hit win over St. John’s in the season-opener, striking out 14 batters in the first game of the season on Friday night. She came back on Saturday to pitch five innings against Akron and her second victory of the season. On Sunday, Purivs tossed a shutout for her third win of the season behind 11 strikeouts.
She finished the week with 31 Ks, averaging 11.42 strikeouts per seven innings and over one and a half strikeouts per inning of work. Purvis is the only SoCon pitcher with three wins this season and has a 1.11 ERA.
Georgia Southern travels to the southwest corner of Florida this weekend to play in the FGCU Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. The tournament begins on Friday morning at 11:15 a.m. against Southern Illinois. GSU faces top-ranked Alabama on Saturday afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
