STATESBORO, GA. – In another round of Déjà vu, Georgia Southern Men's Soccer will face Elon for the second-consecutive year in the SoCon Tournament Semifinals. The Eagles took a 1-0 win over UNCG in the opening round last weekend behind a 65th minute penalty kick goal from
Witt Carlisle.
Friday's game starts at 5:30 p.m. from Furman's Stone Stadium and can be seen live on SoCon TV on SoConSports.com. Georgia Southern is the No. 6 seed in the tournament with a 9-9-0 overall record. The second-seeded Elon Phoenix are 13-4-2 on the season and receiving votes in the most-recent NSCAA national coaches poll.
Earlier this week three Eagles were picked to the All-SoCon First Team for their play this season.
Hunter Norton,
Reed Norton and
Witt Carlisle picked up the honor. It is the first time since 1997 that three Eagles earned spots on the first team. Freshman
Jeremy Rector earned a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team after scoring three goals this season.
Goalkeeper
Neal Bates was named SoCon Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season and enters the weekend with four clean sheets in 2013. Bates ranks second nationally with 102 saves this season.
Witt Carlisle picked up his seventh goal of the season last Saturday with a 65th minute penalty kick. The game-winning goal was his second of the season, adding to his game-winning tally against No. 14 Furman.
Hunter Norton has five goals this season with four assists in his senior campaign as captain of the Eagles.
Reed Norton scored one goal and tallied three assists from his defensive position, leading the Eagle back-line in scoring.
Last season Georgia Southern dropped a 1-0 result to Elon in the SoCon Semifinals. Elon's Chris Thomas scored his 23rd goal of the season in the 36th minute to post the match-winner. Earlier this season a 31st minute goal from Matt Wescoe gave the Phoneix a win over the Eagles in Burlington.
The winner of Friday's semifinal will face either Furman or Wofford in the SoCon Championship Game on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Greenville. That match can be seen live on ESPN3.
