SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Jelani Hewitt's outstanding return to the hardwood and his hometown has netted the junior guard SoCon Player of the Week honors. Hewitt averaged 26.0 points per game in the opening two games of the season including 27 on Monday night at Miami.
The Miramar, Fla., native opened the season with a 25-point effort against Columbia International last Friday. He followed that performance with 27 points in an overtime loss at Miami (Fla.) Monday night. Hewitt went 8-for-8 at the free throw line against the Hurricanes, including hitting both free throws with seven seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Hewitt is the first Eagle in three seasons to earn SoCon Player of the Week Honors. Antonio Hanson was the last GSU player to win the award, winning it on March 2nd, 2010.
Next up for the Eagles is a Saturday night game against Toccoa Falls. The game starts at 8 p.m. inside Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro.
