Eagles’ 23rd annual appearance marks final one as league member
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia Southern Cross Country team is headed to the Birmingham, Ala., metro area and will compete Saturday morning in the 2013 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships. The women's 5K race begins at 11:45 a.m. ET. This final league championship as members of the Southern Conference will mark the 22nd annual appearance for the Eagles.
Freshman Ashton Lord led the Eagles at the Panther Invitational at the Veteran's Park course in October and posted a top-10 finish at that meet. Lord, Katelyn Chancey, Hope Kimberly, Cherrelle King, Ashleigh Rasheed, and Brooke Stanley will represent Georgia Southern at the 2013 SoCon Championships.
"Mental preparation has been a big part of what we have been doing, getting our legs underneath us, and getting rested for this race," said Georgia Southern Cross Country Coach Marlo Mincey. "The base work is done and now we want to make sure they have a plan and feel good about where they are physically."
The challenging course at Veteran's Park in Hoover, Ala., features a number of hills and Coach Mincey and Assistant Coach Adam Colorito have adapted the training circuit for the Eagles to match what they will encounter Saturday morning. The 82-acre park has been the site of several national meets and features professionally designed 5K and 8K trails.
"With our flat-surface training area, we have tried to incorporate as many hills as we can find – there are quite a few on this course -- and being able to preview the course last month helped us with our race planning," Mincey said.
